Gradec or Grič is the name for the old part of Zagreb on the slope of Medvednica, which together with Kaptol makes up the Zagreb of today. In 1242 Bela IV issues the Golden Bull whereby the city is proclaimed a "free and royal city on the Zagreb hill of Gradec“. Between 1242 and 1266 the city was fortified with wooden walls and towers and its form and its street plan has until today remained almost unaltered.
A small number of streets had a name in the Middle Ages: Srednja (today's Ćirilometodska), Blatna (Demetrova), Mesarska (Matoševa), Duga (Radićeva), Popovska (part of Opatička). Gradec (Grič) is today part of the Zagreb town district Gornji grad - Medveščak.
