The Stone Gate

The Stone Gate

The Stone Gate is one of the best preserved monuments of the Old Zagreb. It's actually a building taking the form of a rectangular tower with driveway. It belongs to the fortification system of the Gradec part of Zagreb and it's the only gate that exists to this very day. It was built in the 13th century and it gained its present form in 1760. If you walk past this gate, inside you'll see a chapel with the painting of the Virgin Mary from the Stone Gate, the city's patron. The painting has survived the big fire in 1731 without any damage to it. Beside the baroque gate of the altar dating from the 18th century,  there's a typical shop from the Middle Ages, preserved in its initial state, positioned under the eaves. The entrance door to the shop was placed under one half of the stone arch. The second wing of the arch was walled in and became a shop window. The Stone Gate as one of the city's landmarks was saved from pulling down owing to the selfless effort and support from the Order of the Croatian Dragon. Their meeting place is to be found in the historical hall in the upper floor of the Stone Gate. The Stone Gate turned into a legend when it emerged in the novel of August Šenoa „Zlatarevo Zlato“ (The Goldsmith's Treasure) published in 1871 about a goldsmith living in Zagreb, by the name of Krupić and his daughter who lived in the street of the Stone Gate. The setting for this historical novel is made clear by the presence of a female sculpture „Zlatarevo zlato“ placed in the niche on the western facade. The sculture is the work of the sculptor Ivo Kerdić (1881-1953). The Stone Gate is a protected cultural property of the Republic of Croatia.
