The Mimara Museum on Roussevelt Square in Zagreb was established on accepting a donation from world renowned art collector Ante Topić Mimara and his wife Wiltrud Mimara and was open to public in 1987. The museum's full name is: Public institution „Art collection of Ante and Wiltrud Topić Mimara". However, the museum's statute also allows a shorter name to be used: The Mimara Museum. More than 3,750 diverse artefacts of immense artistic value, from Ancient Greece to objects stemming from Old Egypt and paintings of the great masters - Raphael, Velasquez, Rubens and Rembrandt.
Mimara is Zagreb's most important museum. The glass collection entails valuable artefacts of craftsmen working with glass. More than 300 exhibited items help us to trace the artistic development from Ancient Egypt and the Roman Empire to the reknowned Venetian and other European styles. The art collection from the Far East comprises objects made from rare materials like jade, enamel and rhino horn. The museum houses a library of 5400 specialised titles. The permanent exhibition is conceived as a chronological ordering of historical and artistic periods. Exhibitions around particular themes and student works are regularly held as well as occasional educational workshops.
