Medvedgrad

Medvedgrad

Medvedgrad is an old town (fortification) built in the 13th century (1249 - 1254) after the  attack of the Tatars in 1242. It rests on the southern slopes of the Medvednica mountain, on the Mali Plazur hill, at the height of 593 metres.

Here you can trace the beginnings of the way people lived from prehistoric times. The location was perfect to have surveillance over the area and it enabled a control of trade thoroughfares. It got its name from the Medvednica mountain and it is being mentioned in many documents by different names in the Hungarian and Slavonic terminology.
The term „Arxursina“ stems from the end of the 17th century. It was one of the largest fortifications in Croatia. On Medvedgrad there's  the early gothic chapel of St. Philip and Jacob and the Altar of the Homeland („Oltar domovine“), a memorial to the fallen Croatian soldiers in the Homeland War. The view from the mountain onto Zagreb is spectacular. It is the best place to get a view of Zagreb at night alongside the view from the Sljeme cable car.
