The Maksimir park-forest, first among its kind in southeastern Europe, was opened in 1794 at the motion of bishop Maksimilijan Vrhovac. In 1839 bishop Juraj Haulik gave it an English landscape design. The architectural objects are mostly the work of the constructor Franjo Schücht. The park has 316 hectares of preserved animal and plant specimens found in lowland forests, five lakes (natural and artificial). On the southern forest end there's the Zagreb Zoo. The city area comprising of the residential areas nearby as well as the football stadium of FC Dinamo also bear the name of the park. There's an oak tree in the Maksimir Park known as "Dedek" (Old man), about 600 years old. It can be found near the Mogila.
