King Tomislav Square

King Tomislav Square

The statue of king Tomislav, the first Croatian king, is found on the square by the same name. The Art Pavilion is also located on this square. It was built for the occasion of the Millenium Exbihition held in Budapest in 1896. Croatia was then showcasing its own pavilion. The pavilion saw the application of the latest developments in building technology with a metal central core. This made it possible to decompose the pavilion in Budapest and transport it back to Zagreb by train in order for it to be installed again on its present site. The opening ceremony was held in 1898 alongside a big exhibition of contemporary artists. The pavilion thereby became the first exhibition venue built entirely for this purpose. Since then many exhibitions of today's  greatest Croatian and foreign artist have been staged.
